Aosta is located in the northwestern corner of Italy in the center of the Aosta valley. The Valle d'Aosta is bounded by Switzerland to the north and France to the west. It is a small city with the best roman architectural influences.
Churches and Museums
Chiesa San Stefano - Inside the church, there is a frescoe cycle consisting of 10 panels celebrating the life of the saints. There is also a large statue of San Cristoforo carved out of a section of walnut tree with a diameter of one and a half meters.
Collegiata di Sant'Orso - Towards the outside of the medieval walls of this old city, is situated the Collegiata di Sant'Orso. This is a large complex including a church, bell tower and monastery, mostly in the Romanesque style. The bell tower stands at 46 meters high, and has four floors. It was built between 994 and 1025AD. The interiors of the church are Gothic in nature. It also contains a remarkable wooden choir decorated with frescoes, dating back to the 11th century.
Archeological Museum - Situated in Via S Orso is the Archeological Museum, also called "Museo Archeologico Regionale". It contains the relics and artifacts dating back to the Roman and medieval periods.
Historical Buildings and Monuments
Augustian Arch -The Augustian Arch was earlier the entry to the town. It was erected in 35 BC to celebrate the victory of the Roman troops over the Salassi.
Roman theatre - The Roman theatre is 22 meters high. It is well protected by a scaffolding structure in an attempt to preserve its integrity. The majestic facade of the main rectangular body of the building surrounds the semicircular cave. This facade makes it a covered theatre. The structure has a capacity to hold 4,000 spectators.
Torre dei Belivi - The Torre dei Belivi is situated near the theater. It was earlier the governor's residence. It is also known to be served as a court and also as a prison.
Places of Interest
Roman Bridge - The Roman Bridge over the Buthier River is still well preserved. The waters of the Buthier no more run under this 17.16 m arch.
Castle of Fénis - This is a beautiful castle with wall paintings and frescoes. The lovely courtyard of its is worth a visit. This castle is situated towards the left of Val de Fenis.
Events
Bataille des Reines in October - The Valle d'Aosta's famous cow fights are organized here since the 17th century. This is a huge event held in Aosta on the third Sunday in October at the Croix Noire Stadium. The owners of the winning cow get feasted and presented with barrels of wine.
Fiera de Sant'Orso in January - This is a large Aosta crafts fair which features music, plays, and dances. It is held on the last two days of January.
