Bolzano is situated along the Brenner highway. It has got a fine network of motorway and railway line. So, reaching Bolzano is convinient from all directions. It has got one of the favorable geographical positions. It lies at the point of contact between the Mediterranean and Mitteleuropean civilizations. The places and events you should not be missing in Bolzano are :
Via dei Portici - This is the busiest centre of the city. The streets here are lined with arcades under which about a hundred first-rate shops offer a vast choice of items of all kinds. Starting from wood, ceramic, glass and fabric handicrafts, to sportswear and sports equipment, it has got everything handy. You can get your hands on the famous Loden coats and jackets, and the bread, "speck", wines and sweets here.
Walther Square - This square is the central meeting point of the town. The square offer many sights. Some of those are the Cathedral with its elegant Gothic steeple, the Domenican Church with its cloister and St. John's Chapel decorated with frescoes by painters from the Giottoschool, the Franciscan Church with its pretty cloister and the interesting wooden altarpiece carved by Hans Klocker, the picturesque Fruit Market.
Maretsch Castle - This castle is now owned by the Bolzano City Tourist Office. This has been completely restored and now used as a modern, functional conference centre.
Runkelstein Castle - The castle's walls have got frescoes of a rare pictorial tradition.
Bozano Festivals
Bolzano abounds in special events of great appeal. In March and April the flower market and exhibition and tasting of typical South Tyrolean wines; from June to September the "Bolzano Summer Festival" including classical music concerts, outdoor pop music shows, jazz concerts, ballet, theater, cultural displays and exhibitions, the Festival of Contemporary Music.
